Let us Celebrate and Reclaim all Freedoms
"One does not sell the land people walk on." ~ Crazy Horse, September 23, 1875 As we celebrate Independence Day in the United States - an independence which, interesting to note, was won with violence - I cannot help but reflect on my recent visit to Rapid City, South Dakota where I gave the closing keynote address at the annual Reclaiming Youth International (RYI) conference (www.reclaiming.com).
I serve on the board of this wonderful organization and was inducted as its Treasurer this year. One of the highlights of this conference is ceremony for the Spirit of Crazy Horse Award given to an honored recipient. The ceremony is held at the site where the Crazy Horse Memorial is being carved out into a mountain not far from Mount Rushmore, the home of the five sculpted US Presidents. The Crazy Horse Memorial is much larger than the Mount Rushmore memorial, as all five President faces would fit in the face of Crazy Horse. Additionally, Crazy Horse has an arm outstretched (measuring 236 feet) as he rides a galloping horse. He points to the valley beyond, the inscription reading: "My land is where my people lie buried." A monument that fills me with tears. What can we learn from our First Nation? The "wisdom tradition" emanating from the First Nation tribes is amazing. As a student of world tradition, I am fascinated by the Circle of Courage (COC) program developed by RYI from this tradition. The COC program - supporting youth who are disenfranchised and suffering in the system - is based on a circle with four quadrants. The quadrants are arranged in a format as follows:
So, on our Independence Day let us all say a prayer ... for all the souls of all First Nation ancestors who lie buried and pray that their souls rest in eternal peace. Let us also send a prayer of gratitude for the profound wisdom tradition, born to these amazing humans who so worshiped our planet. Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful Independence Day celebration. Many Blessings,
