Dear Friend,

So much news to report, so much peace on the horizon. After a trip to Switzerland in July and Australia in August, I'm set to travel to France and Switzerland next week, before heading to Vancouver at the end of the month where I am
one of the 100 invited to the Vancouver Peace Summit with the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu.

With such travels behind and before me, I felt inspired to write on the global vision of us all becoming world citizens. Read below in Musings.

Sharing and Caring World Citizens Creating a World that Works for All

This last month I was blessed to travel to Australia with my good friend Ples Felix and speak to kids, students and adults on the benefits of a forgiving heart. What I am left with - besides the satisfaction of connecting with dear ones in another country, and sharing our story of forgiveness in 30 talks, book readings, TV and radio interviews - is the awareness of a change that must be made.

So many of us are proud Americans or people proud of our heritage, our city, our football teams. We hold such high regard for the distinction of being from a powerful and influential nation. But what of that pride and awareness of a collective that encompasses every person, every country and every race, creed and color?

peaceE

The change that must be made? From nationalists to planetary-ists. From a sense of separation to unity. From competition with other countries to cooperation. From Americans to World Citizens. From leveraging over another to working alongside. From bitterness and enmity to forgiveness and peace. It's a large world view, but it's a view I got a glimpse of in my travels.

As I have gone on my sojourns over the years - most recently Switzerland in July and Australia in August - I have seen that the story of forgiveness, redemption and restorative justice goes beyond borders. The forgiveness of the murderer of my son Tariq in 1995 holds the same seeds of hope and freedom in many people, no matter where they are from, or what city or country they live in.

I have seen that with a unified foundation, we can discover a world that works for everyone. We can work together to share our knowledge and awareness, and not make one of us right and the other wrong.  With my roots and soul from Africa, combined with a spirituality from the East, and the materialism of the west, I found the benefits of marrying all three together. Along these lines, we can learn from other cultures, and not shun their lifestyles, to help grow our own culture.

Our culture of scattered, multitasking, over-committed workers could take a lesson here.

For example, on the trip to Australia - sponsored by Ellen Brooker - founder of YES (Youth Empowerment Services) - I was able to learn about the ways of the Australians. They have a different pace of life than we Americans.  We are extremely fast-paced and do not stop to take a breath or to smell the roses. Because of their pace and gorgeous landscapes, Australians are, in general, more in tune with nature.  A friendly group, they have time for strangers, taking the time to connect with people and even driving them places they need to go.

Our culture of scattered, multitasking, over-committed workers could take a lesson here.  And we can support other countries in their development as well. And we could do it not in the ways of force or demand - such as was done in the past with the American Indians culture - but in a way of sharing, education and inspiration. It would all be about working with each other to see what works in the big picture.

I've always believed to get true world security, we must have as foundation the type of freedom and opportunity we enjoy here in the US. We are a powerful country that can make such a difference. We can think of ways we can inspire others around our globe, with a mindset that large.

Everyone counts, and there should be no distinguishing the nationality of those causalities in war.  A loss of life is a loss for all.  With such a high state of viewing the planet, what could we create that would work for the entire world?  What would your actions be if there were no enemies, and only other World Citizens along the path?

We would share, care and forgive ... as we discover, create and celebrate a world that works for everyone.

Young One in Australia Comments on Forgiveness

Hello Mr. Khamisa,

My name is Emma and I am 16 years old. I witnessed your story today at the Forest High School in Sydney, Australia, and you truly are an inspiration to us all. You touched my heart, and I would just like to congratulate you on everything you have achieved with TKF.  It was an absolute privilidge to be able to listen to you and Mr Felix's stories in person, and it is something I will never forget. I know now that I will definitely stop and think before I act from now on. After witnessing your story, you have inspired me to be a better person, and I thank you for that.
