Dear Friend,

As the holidays come upon us, we take the time for reflection and appreciation. In this month's offerings, I share a musing that may challenge some of us, I unveil a brand new workshop, and I wish to hold gratitude for all in my life, and that includes all of us doing the work of peace.

A Time of Thanksgiving
       For Everything in our Lives

Thanksgiving is a time to express gratitude - gratitude to the Universe for the gift of life! I believe life indeed is a gift, and what we do with our life is a gift we give back to the Universe. We are here to serve and that is our main purpose. Service of humanity and the planet must remain our focus. So at this time, we will take the opportunity to show gratitude to our parents for the birth of our lives, no matter how our childhood unfolded. We take the opportunity to offer our thanks to our siblings, friends, family, teachers and peers.

When we take the time this month for thanksgiving - a meal with family, a gathering of friends, an acknowledgment of the good in our world - we have another opportunity: to give thanks for everything in our lives. Everything? Yes, everything. Imagine such a reality.

thx

How can we give thanks for those people in our lives that actually wished or caused harm upon us? How can we have gratitude for the incidences that brought us trouble, sorrow, pain, and loss? It all comes from a mindset and a higher view. And I believe we can all come from this place. It will lead us to peace and freedom, through the necessary pathway of acceptance, awareness and forgiveness.

So what can we do with those people who have caused us harm? It is my vision that we all express our gratitude to this group as well. No matter how our lives came to be, those with whom we have interacted have helped shape us into who we have come to be. We would not be who we are without these people coming into our lives ... challenging us, testing us, showing us what WE are truly made of. In the face of anyone, can we maintain equanimity, patience, compassion, an open and expressive heart? Some people are easier for us than others. It's those with whom we have the hardest time who are our greatest teachers. A word of thanks - possibly silently - can be sent along to these souls.

During this Thanksgiving season, my goal is to express gratitude in a profound way: to say a big "thank you" with every cell of my body. Of course I will say thank you to my family, my daughter Tasreen and my son Tariq. Though taken away from us in 1995, Tariq put me on my life's path: serving children and adults on achieving peace through the practice of forgiveness. I will also offer gratitude to the person who took Tariq's life, Tony. I will send gratitude not for the devastating act of murder, but for him as a person and for one who actually did place me so directly onto my higher path.

And in that spirit of transformation, we offer our deepest appreciation to our loved ones this season ... as well a message of forgiveness and well being to the people who hurt us.
____________________________________________

A lot of these concepts are captured in my various books, including the latest Random House book "The Secrets of the Bulletproof Spirit" coauthored with Jillian Quinn. In fact, in Secret #7 we note that feeling entitled for a "better life" or a life without hard hits actually can deter your spiritual growth. Those with a bulletproof spirit resist feelings of entitlement and use all of their energy and resources to do all they can with whatever it is they've been given. As Robert Louis Stevenson said, "Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but of playing a poor hand well."

In such writings and in the work we do at TFK (www.tkf.org), we wish to lead others onto a path of awareness and empowerment. We teach that through forgiveness we can transform conflict into love and unity; we can create a brother or a sister out of a potential foe, such as I did with Tony and Tony's grandfather Ples Felix.Through TKF, millions of children, youth and adults have been favorably touched with this forgiveness message in our country and abroad. We are successfully keeping kids away from gangs, guns and violence.

And in that spirit of transformation, we offer our deepest appreciation to our loved ones this season ... as well a message of forgiveness and well being to the people who hurt us. For they may have gifted us with our greatest lesson, on the other side of the pain, where a higher awareness awaits us all. Life is a journey and all who cross our path do so for a reason.

Let us give thanks for it all.

Many Blessings,
Azim N. Khamisa

A TOUCHING TESTIMONIAL

A Word of Thanks from a Reader of Azim's Book

Hi Azim,

You have been on my mind. Back in April of 2008, you gave a copy of your book "From Murder To Forgiveness" to Michelle and me. For whatever the reason, my heart was not ready to read it at that time. As I write to you today, I've just finished it. Maybe as a father of sons I feared reading it as the thought of losing one of them was too much to contemplate.

Your words moved me to tears several times. I thank you for the great spiritual intimacy you share with me, the reader. I couldn't help but want to write and simply thank you for the gift of this book. It is so much more than a story, but a life lesson to use on my own personal journey.
