Dear Friend,

With a new year comes another chance at starting anew, with a fresh start on our visions and intentions. All we must do is dream and then take that first step.

"It gets easier once you get started."

Azim's Monthly Musings
The First Step Towards Our Goals

The quote of the month,"It gets easier once you get started," comes from a 17-year-old boy who was giving advice to his mother before getting on a ride at Disneyland. She was somewhat fearful of the ride and had her hesitations. I thought the young man's words gave such a profound message to us all ... those of us who never get started with some adventure, path, project because of our own fear.

Now is the time for New Year's resolutions,
a chance to put out all our intentions for losing weight, or working out, or eating right, or taking those vital steps towards our success. But how many of us will actually get started? Many New Year's resolutions fall by the wayside over time, and this does not quite serve us or the universe. There are many excuses we make. Even the most seasoned and successful people find that they can't get started because of various reasons:
  • Fear of failure
  • Lack of commitment
  • Not enough time
  • Not enough money
  • Not enough energy
  • Not enough information about the task
  • Believing tomorrow will be a better time to start
When I started the Tariq Khamisa Foundation in 1995, I had no training in youth violence or teaching the principles of peace and nonviolence to children. I did, however, have the unquenchable passion and an unwavering commitment to make a difference. Fifteen years later TKF has reached millions of kids for the sake of preventing youth violence, while  the work of CANEI (Constant and Never Ending Improvement) supports the healing of youth already in the system. In addition, through my extensive public speaking, through forgiveness workshops and through the various books and CDs available, the message of "peace through forgiveness" has helped many to heal wounds, grudges and regrets. Recently my message has gone beyond our borders, receiving tremendous national and international media attention.

And the thought that comes to mind at this point in time:what if I had never gotten started? I am so glad I followed my passion even though I did not have the experience, money or know-how at the out-start.

Getting started can be the most important part of the whole equation. As Mark Twain outlined, "The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one." And so many of the wise minds of the past had other ways of looking at the same phenomena. "What is not started today is never finished tomorrow," said Johann Wolfgang von Goethe"The distance is nothing; it's only the first step that is difficult," said Marquise du Deffand. And poet Horace said, "He has half the deed done who has made a beginning."

So my purpose in saying all of this? To inspire you. To ignite you in going for your dreams and higher pursuits. To not buy into the concept that you don't know enough, or that you need more time, energy, money, information. Just start! Be committed. And for goodness sakes, get on the Disneyland ride. Heed Garrett's advice: it will get easier once you get started.

By so doing, you will create a meaningful and purposeful life for yourself. And perhaps, more importantly, you will make this a better world. As we approach the auspicious 21-12-2012 date, I do believe we are being ushered into a more enlightened era. I see evidence of this in my extensive speaking engagements as I hear the words of other speakers and experts. However such shifts will take place for you and for all of us if you put your worthy and noble ideas into action ... and simply get started.

Many Blessings,
Azim N. Khamisa
FUN AND MEANINGFUL NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS

 Top 10 New Year's Resolutions
  1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay 'them.'list
  2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.
  3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. 'An idle mind is the devil's workshop.' And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.
  4. Enjoy the simple things.
  5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.
  6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.
  7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.
  8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.
  9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.
  10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

MURDER TO FORGIVENESS MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Project READ Using Azim's Best-Selling Book

Project READ is an inter-generational literacy program in Redwood City, California. It offers many literacy services to those who work, live, or go to school in Redwood City. One of Project READ's services is a Book Club that takes place in the Maguire Correctional Facility, a county jail facility for men.

Book Club is a critical literacy class in which prisoner learners read and critique literature. Members use themes from the writings as tools for assessing their situations and circumstances. By connecting literature to their own lives, Book Club members build self esteem and create sustareadinable change in their lives and in their community.

Recently, Project READ's Book Club decided to delve deep into the theme of hope and chose to read and discuss Azim Khamisa's book, From Murder to Forgiveness

While reading and dialoging about From Murder to Forgiveness, members have been thinking a lot about the book's themes: forgiveness, choices, and responsibility. They have reported that reading this book has made them think of victims on "the other side" of the crime, some for the very first time. One member reported that as a result of reading this book he is now able to feel empathy.

For these prisoners From Murder to Forgiveness stands as a tangible example of how teamwork and partnership, as opposed to violence, can lead to very powerful changes in a community.  Book Club members have come to embrace the concept that responding to violence with violence will not lead to positive returns or peace.

Azim's story has inspired prisoners to ask themselves three important questions: "What is my purpose?" "What have I done to change my community?' "What can I do to change my life and positively impact my community?"Their responses have led them to become agents of positive change for themselves and others. For example, each member wrote an apology to someone whom they have harmed, similar to Tony Hicks' apology highlighted in the book.

Some of these apologies have been mailed and have opened spaces for healing.

As Project READ's Book Club enters the New Year, they enter it triumphantly, inspired by Azim's ability to forgive, heal and overcome.
