Dear Friend,

In honor of Valentine's Day February 14, and in honor of continuing the process of the search for truth and love, I decided to revisit a topic I brought up last May: lifelong, sustainable relationships. See the musings for my latest discovery.

Also of note I wanted to let you in on a campaign starting in March, the month of my son Tariq's birthday. Emphasizing the mission of the Tariq Khamisa Foundation to "Stop Kids from Killing Kids," the initiative is dedicated to raising awareness about the widespread devastation of youth violence. The goal of the campaign is to educate communities and raise money to help bring peace to our streets and our children.  More next month.

Another Look at "Infatuation"
On the Path of Love

In our May 2009 newsletter, I wrote a piece about my personal search for a sustainable relationship with a promise to return to the topic upon further reflections and time. As I continued my journey into understanding this vast and intricate topic, inquiring more deeply into what creates a sustainable loving, lifelong relationship, I was led to an amazing book by Deepak Chopra: "The Path of Love."

For those who wish to delve deeper as well into relationships and their longevity, I recommend this book. One of the central messages of the book is that there are differences between interpretations of loving relationships within the east and west cultures. I, myself, being of the occidental or "eastern" culture who has spent a majority of my life in the west, can relate to interpretations of both east and west.

As I learned through the part of the book, there is a major distinction between the interpretation of one very important topic to our inquiry of love: Infatuation. This is where all relationships begin. You have been there. I have been there. We all have been there.

loving

Infatuation, what Chopra calls "a second birth of innocence," is not the negative and naive concept that we in the west hold and believe to be necessarily temporary.  It is, as he sees it, not a deluded state of mind but actually that of a highly evolved state. When we meet someone and experience them as new, innocent, loving and pure - in a state of infatuation - we are akin to those devotees who hold devotion to their beloved. And the idea that we necessarily have to lose this state is not the case. Only through sustained focus, commitment and choice, along with a perception aligned with a new belief system, can we maintain that "falling in love" and infatuation that could help us sustain a loving, lifelong relationship.  The secret is to NEVER fall out of infatuation with our loved one.  Do you think that is possible?  Western civilizations often accept that the infatuation stage does not last. The eastern philosophy believes that it can. What do you believe?

For myself, after reading Chopra's book, I am challenging some of the beliefs regarding what it takes to create a sustainable relationship. In the end, I know it is our beliefs that propel us, but also limit us.

I believe many of you have similar interests in unlocking eternal love. My inquiry gets deeper, and I am still on the journey.

Recently, at an event in which I spoke, I met a very delightful couple that have been married for 51 years, still very infatuated. When I asked the husband his secret, he said, "My wife is perfect and sometime she becomes imperfect to make me look good." Now that is sweet. And innocent. The wife too showed a lot of love for husband. So there is hope here for those of us looking for a sustainable, life-long love. Congratulations and blessings to those who have achieved it! Staying infatuated could be a key component to sustainability.

With such a huge response to my the May 2009 newsletter, I believe many of you have similar interests in unlocking eternal love. My inquiry gets deeper, and I am obviously still on the journey. I would like to hear from you on this topic, to know what you have learned on your journey into and through loving relationships.

Many Blessings,

AZIM IN DESMOND TUTU'S NEW BOOK

Recently Azim received a call from Mpho Tutu, the daughter of Desmond Tutu, the well renowned peace activist from South Africa, telling Azim that he was put into the Made for Goodness book, to be published in March.

As the book's website notes:

In Made for Goodness, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize winner and international icon of peace and reconciliation, shares his vision on why we can find hope and joy in the world's darkest moments by realizing that we were made for goodness, that we are wired so that goodness will win in the end. Archbishop Tutu is a spiritual leader and symbol of love and forgiveness on the level of Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Nelson Mandela, and Made for Goodness, written with his daughter Mpho, is one of the most personal and inspirational books he's ever written.

SUPPORTIVE LETTER FROM A GRATEFUL PRINCIPLE

Abridged Letter Thanks the Trustees of TKF

As Principal of Correia Middle School (CMS) a comprehensive middle school for 7th - 8th graders in one of our nation's largest urban districts, I have an opportunity to interact daily with youngsters between the ages of 11-14 years of age.

On January 13, 2010, the Tariq Khamisa Foundation (TKF) brought their "Violence Impact Forum" program to CMS.  Over 830 young adolescents, their teachers, counselors, and administrators listened with the utmost respect to the powerful messages delivered by Azim Khamisa, Ples Felix, and other panelists from the program.  It is with extreme gratitude that I communicate with you the impact that the TKF had upon lives that day alone at CMS.

One day earlier, two of our students bullied and punched another student. My Vice-Principals and I were outraged at this act of violence, and left the campus on the evening of January 12th with heavy hearts. The next morning, we met with the assailants and issued consequences.

Whatever happened in the brief moments I had spent in the presence of the TKF members (the same day) allowed me to think more clearly about how to support, rather than to simply punish, the two adolescents who had hurt another adolescent.  It became crystal clear to me that these two youngsters needed to hear the messages about to be delivered by the members of the "Violence Impact Forum."    Their assignment was to take notes in order to write a reflective response, which I would personally read.

Both boys wrote pages in response to the TKF presentation. They both admitted that their own anger had robbed them of their ability to think-a lesson they learned from the presentation. Now I know that my counselors and staff can build upon this one learned lesson and empower more and more youngsters to learn how to calm down and think before taking action.

Words elude me as to how to express my deepest appreciation and respect for the work you do.
