Dear Friend,
For this month - the birthday anniversary of my son - I am proud to officially launch a campaign emphasizing the mission of the Tariq Khamisa Foundation to "Stop Kids from Killing Kids." The initiative is dedicated to raise awareness about the widespread devastation of youth violence. The goal of the campaign is to educate communities and raise money to help bring peace to our streets and our children.
We all continue to be part of the solution to the plague of violence. We are having widespread impact, so do not give up hope. In fact, see the article printed in the Jakarta Post, showing how we are reaching to global proportions. Keep the faith.

A Birthday Wish and A Commitment
To Peace and Nonviolence
Had he lived, my boy Tariq would be 36 on Saturday.
Tariq, like his sister Tasreen, would probably be married and have a couple of his own kids by now. Tariq loved children, and they loved him. However, that was not his destiny. There would be another path that opened up, not just for him of course, but for a world in need of peace and forgiveness. As many of you know, after Tariq was murdered during a gang-related ambush while he delivered pizzas in January 1995, I had to find a way to honor him and his life. I also had to figure out how and why I would live the rest of my life without him.
The Tariq Khamisa Foundation (www.TKF.org) lives on and is in its fifteenth year making a difference in the lives of millions of children, bringing principles of peace, nonviolence and forgiveness. Through a powerful story of forgiveness and redemption, TKF is successfully saving our children's lives from death or prison, empowering the right choices for kids to stay away from gangs, violence and drugs and to embrace the peacemaking path.

In honor of Tariq's birthday on Saturday, I am dedicating this month's newsletter to TKF's newest campaign launched two months ago. Stopping Kids From Killing Kids. Please go to www.stopkidsfromkillingkids.org and support our campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to end this senseless loss of lives. We want to raise everyone's awareness regarding youth violence, the second leading cause of death for our teens. The money raised will be used to continue to provide successful, proven programs. You can help and it is simple. The mission is to reach a million people and raise $1 million dollars. If you do the math right, all you would have to do is give $1 (though more is welcomed) and make sure you get two more people to join the campaign and also give $1... and then ensure those two also bring in two others into the cause, and so forth. We believe if everyone followed this chain of action, TKF can achieve its goal of $1 million and one million supporters by the end of this year.

Who would have thought that TKF would grow in its 15 years to a staff of over 50 employees, developing five unique school-based programs that could reach over 8 million kids? We have an awesome staff and a dedicated Board of Directors, and together we work passionately to meet TKF's mandate of ending the cycle of youth violence.
We are by far the most violent nation in the world. What is so encouraging is TKF's leading edge, comprehensive solutions. Through school programs, "Violence Impact Forums" and other good works, TKF saves the lives of many young ones who will contribute to making this a better world. I know Tariq would have been a positive agent of change in our world. And so would all the other kids we lose on a daily basis. It does not have to be your own kid who dies; when a child dies, everyone in the community is wounded and diminished.
We can be triumphant over this major social malaise in our society and be a positive role model to the world. At present, we have a ways to go. As one of the world's superpowers, our country's culture has a huge impact on all cultures in our world. It is a travesty that we are exporting our violence to other parts of the planet. What happens in the USA happens in the world. This is an awesome responsibility for concerned citizens. It is important we get a grip on this challenge. Children killing children is not a mark of a civilized nation. We all love our country, and I am fully confident we can win this challenge. However, we cannot do it without your help.
And so I ask - in Tariq's honor - please join this campaign and help TKF take on the challenge of stopping kids from killing kids in order to promote a more peaceful and compassionate nation, and in so doing create a role model that will inspire the rest of the world. I know we can.
Happy birthday Tariq.
Many Blessings,
Azim N. Khamisa
