Dear Friend,

Wishing all the mothers a Happy Mother's Day this month. Remembering the unconditional love of a mother, let's bring forth such a heart for all the souls out there.

With a full heart, and a courageous spirit, we allow ourselves to be aware of the impact of violence so we can all do something about it. Read ahead.

Seeing the Full Impact of Violence  Inspires Call to Action and Change

Many of us may not understand the full impact of violence until it happens to us. I know that I did not. And now I do.

Violence is extremely painful, and hurts very deep, often scaring the soul forever. If we all understood the devastating pain of violence, I do not believe we would be violent to another human being. Awareness, my friend, is the key.

For those of you who read my newsletter and have not directly experienced the pain that is caused by violence, I invite you to experience a TKF Violence Impact Forum at one of our schools. I promise you that when you do actually experience the immense pain that our children have suffered as a result of violence, it will break your heart ... as it did mine. My heart was broken many times this month during my speaking engagement at a Nevada school, where child after child approached me with their own devastation in their eyes. (See detail below.)

By simply hearing of such children, do we really comprehend what is happening here?  We must ask ourselves - how often do we experience violence in our culture? The United States is by far the most violent first world nation. And there are no communities free of senseless violence. I would not be doing the work I am doing to abate violence had I not directly experienced the pain of violence and of losing my son Tariq.

Again, awareness is the key. You do not have to wait until violence crosses your path or the path of a loved one. If you will make it to one of the school presentations (click HERE for more information on speaking engagements) you will directly experience the pain that is devastating many of us, most notably our children.

Awareness will lead to action and this will lead to a life of nonviolence.

TKF is successfully teaching the reality of violence and how much pain it brings.  It is also teaching that in face of violence we can all make good and nonviolence choices. You cannot destroy dark with dark. You cannot meet violence with more violence. If we choose to do that, the pain and grief of violence will never go away.

We all must do that in our lives. Yet it is difficult to do this unless we directly experience the pain of violence first.

However, with awareness and right action, we can destroy violence with nonviolence. We can destroy revenge with forgiveness. Revenge is the precursor of every new act of violence. We can go into a dark room and destroy dark with light. We all must do that in our lives. Yet it is difficult to do this unless we directly experience the pain of violence first.

Please do not wait until violence hits you or a loved one; experience it through the work we are doing and then commit to lead a life of nonviolence. We must always make nonviolent choices. Violence is never, never, never the right response, irrespective of the circumstances. Please join the work we are doing at TKF and ANK and let's strongly commit to eradicate violence from our society - especially when it comes to the young souls of our community.

At this Mother's Day let us pray and keep all mothers in our prayers that have suffered the loss of their children due to violence, wars or other causes. As a society we must stand against violence. As Gandhi said, "Nonviolence is a weapon of the strong." Here we acknowledge, celebrate and put into practice the principles of nonviolence: goodwill, friendship, empathy, compassion, forgiveness and love.

It is time - for awareness, commitment and action.

Many Blessings,
Azim N. Khamisa
A Recent Heartbreaking Trip to a School

Las Vegas Special Engagement Opens Eyes and Hearts

In April Azim had the priveledge to speak to over 1,500 6th, 7th, and 8th grade children, with 70 more of them special-ed kids, abused children or those who have experienced loss. Though he brought them a story of redemption and hope, the event also truly affected Azim.

"It broke my heart to see this much grief in the kids, says Azim, who came home from the trip, cried his eyes out and then went to bed at 8:30 p.m. "You could see the pain in their eyes. Some hugged me. The toughest part is seeing how difficult it is for kids to grow up in our society. Adults are oblivious to their challenges and not providing the right support."

Azim has committed to make this trend is changing.
