THE ROADMAP TO PEACE
Shortly after the 9/11 tragedy, when our country, as well as the entire world, was in a state of shock and fear, I emerged from a deep meditation with a profound “aha.” I reached for my journal and wrote what I call a formula for peace:
- Sustained goodwill creates.friendship. Sustained.friendship creates trust.
- Sustained trust creates empathy.
- Sustained empathy creates compassion, and Sustained compassion creates peace.
Ai, I travel around the country speaking about peace and nonviolence, people continually ask me, “How do you extend goodwill to the person who killed your son?” The answer is: “You do it through forgiveness.”
“How do you forgive the person who killed your son?” The answer is: ”You do it through compassion and empathy.”
“How do you have compassion and empathy for the person who killed your son?” The answer is: “You must go beyond the physical, emotional and mental. You must get to your soul.”
This book is the roadmap to the soul – the roadmap to peace.
From Fulfillment to Peace , my third book in a trilogy, is the culmination of a powerfully transformative journey that began on the morning of January 22, 1995. That was when I received a devastating call informing me that my only son Tariq had been shot and killed.
In my first book, Azim’s Bardo: From Murder to Forgiveness, I describe in detail the tragedy that might have destroyed my life – had it not catapulted me onto a spiritual path that led to the creation of the Tariq Khamisa Foundation (TKF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending youth violence.
My second book, From Forgiveness to Fulfillment, describes how I found my way back to living a life filled with meaning and purpose. I previously thought that this final book of the trilogy would be titled From Fulfillment to Enlightenment. But along my journey to enlightenment, something shifted. I found peace. I wasn’t looking for peace. It simply came to me after enduring the loss of my son and transforming my grief into doing good deeds through compassion, empathy, and forgiveness. Such meaningful and purposeful work not only brought me fulfillment; it also gave me the gift of peace. People sometimes comment that I have a calm, peaceful, and gentle spirit. That’s because even when things don’t work out, I feel calm in my center. For this, I am in constant gratitude. So, if you, like me, are on a journey to enlightenment, you just might find a wonderful blessing along the way – the blessing of peace.
For me, peace is a stepping stone to enlightenment. Since I was able to achieve peace in the worst of circumstances, I believe that peace is achievable for all of us. I also have great conviction that we can get to peace quickly when we put it into daily practice. This book is about the process and practice of achieving and sustaining peace on both an individual and a global level.
Af3 you read these pages, I have woven nuggets of spiritual wisdom to create a roadmap with detailed directions. It is my sincere wish that this roadmap will guide you to continually return to the high vibratory emotions that are essential to maintaining peace – no matter what happens in your life.
